Notre-Dame Basilica Montreal, Canada

The Notre-Dame Basilica was built between 1824 and 1829 in the historic district of Old Montreal. The interior is grand and colourful, its ceiling is coloured deep blue and decorated with golden stars. The stained glass windows along the walls of the sanctuary do not depict biblical scenes, but rather scenes from the religious history of Montreal.  In the evening we attended the show called, “And Then There Was Light”, which is a historical and cultural multimedia show presenting the founding of Montreal and the Notre Dame Basilica.

Interesting and random facts – Celine Dion married Rene Angelil on December 17, 1994. On May 31, 2000 there was a provincial state funeral for superstar Maurice “Rocket” Richard, and on October 3, 2000 there was the state funeral of Pierre Trudeau (Canada’s 15th prime minister) at the Basilica.

Designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1989.
